Live Another Day || Delia and Teddy

Delia’s heart was beating so loudly that she was sure it was eventually going to thump right out of her chest. Not able to watch what was going down at the opposite end of the bed, she kept her attention focused on the clock on the nightstand, daring the time to fly by faster.

At least until she heard a sickening whacking sound, followed by something hitting the floor with a thud.

Her head shot up at all of the commotion, and it didn’t take Delia long to notice that Teddy was nowhere in sight. Running on nothing but pure adrenaline, she jumped off the bed, only then realizing exactly what had happened. Instead of money, there’d been a gun in the safe. When Teddy had tried to use it on the man, he’d smacked her across the head with his own instead. Why he’d chosen that route instead of just shooting her, Delia wasn’t sure. But at least she was still alive, thank goodness.

Without thinking or even knowing for certain whose it was, Delia scooped up the weapon that was laying next to her mother’s body in one swift move. Squeezing her eyes shut as tightly as she could manage, she aimed and fired. 

Pain. Sheer, blinding pain. 

The residual shock from having the butt of a gun driven into her skull still rang piercingly through her brain; with her eyes watering and blood trickling down her chin, it was all Teddy could do to lie there —that was, until she heard the shot.

“Delia!” Teddy screamed, her vision refusing to clear. The terror in her voice tinged it red — pure, unadulterated fear for her daughter. “Delia, talk to me! Delia!”

No, no, no! Teddy fought in vain against the black, seething unconsciousness. She could barely lift her head from the ground but she did it anyway — there was no way she’d be leaving her little girl alone. What the hell was happening? As the blurred edges of her vision started to return, the scene she was met with made even less sense than before.
