❝ –– perhaps it’s true that things can change in a day. and when they do, those few dozen hours, like the salvaged remains of a burned house—the charred clock, the singed photograph, the scorched furniture—must be resurrected from the ruins and examined. and suddenly, they become the bleached bones of a story.
“As beautiful as ever — and I’m not just saying that because I’m your mother.”
As Delia listened to Teddy’s outline of the perfect life, she couldn’t help but wonder about specific parts of it. Assuming that she and Gabe actually had a future together, did he really want to be a surgeon as much as she’d always dreamed of it? Would he even want children of his own? And more importantly ones that were half her?
“If I’m going to have these two babies so close together, all you grandparents had better be ready to do a bunch of babysitting. But not t o o much spoiling.” When she’d find the time, Delia wasn’t sure, but she was determined not to settle. It was going to be easy, but she was going to have both a family and a legacy worthy career. “Wow, way to share us with the in-laws there. No, but seriously though. We can only come over for dinner if you promise me that you’ll leave all the necessary cooking up to Dad.”
“Now, that’s just mean,” Teddy laughed — a r e a l , joyful laugh that came from her heart. Only
two people in the w o r l d could ever make her laugh like that, and it was so good
to have the worries of the future rest gentle on her mind for once. “I’m not t h a t bad a cook. I mean, I can carve a turkey like nobody’s business — that has to count for something, right?”
“And who
says you get a say in how much spoiling
we’ll be doing? I’ll be a N a n a —
nothing’s going to
get in the way of me and my little angels.” Suddenly,
a realization dawned upon her; Teddy felt her smile
slip away, only to be replaced by h o r r o r . “Oh,
god. You mean I’m going to have to put up with Alex Karev until I’m old and gray? Sorry, wedding’s off,”
she chuckled, a grin spreading across her face.
