The Light || Jake and Teddy

Jake nodded for a moment and he slowly recomposed and let go. Jake sniffled and slowly pulled away from Teddy. He still hadn’t said a word. His large hands came up and tenderly framed Teddy’s face. He looked into her eyes and he felt a calm just wash over him and he could finally breathe. Inhaling slowly, Jake whispered to Teddy, “I missed you so much, Teddy-Bear,” the nickname just came automatically. It all felt so normal. “I love you,” he whispered and leaned in to press a kiss on her forehead.

Jake’s hands dropped from her face and he took her hands. He was gone for six weeks, and he wanted to know exactly everything he missed. The surgeon took a step back to look at his wife and take a full mental image of what she looked like. It was as his eyes roamed down, that he noticed it. He noticed the small, yet noticeable baby bump. His eyes grew and his hands were instantly attracted to it. He carefully placed his hands over it and the first grin in months graced his lips, “Teddy… Is that…?” He knew it was, but..

Teddy hadn’t expected him to notice so soon; barely a minute had passed between them and already he knew — but at least now she wouldn’t have to figure out how to tell him. A smile in her glass-green eyes, Teddy looked up: “Yes.”

There was no need for any more words than that, for the passing silence spoke enough for the both of them. It was far from how she’d imagined this — this moment that both she and Jake had been waiting on for so long. But it wasn’t the six weeks she’d been alone that changed it all.

Back then, she hadn’t known she loved him; now, there was nothing she was surer of.
