❝ –– perhaps it’s true that things can change in a day. and when they do, those few dozen hours, like the salvaged remains of a burned house—the charred clock, the singed photograph, the scorched furniture—must be resurrected from the ruins and examined. and suddenly, they become the bleached bones of a story.
Her lids felt heavy over bloodshot eyes and her fear was there, but distant, like it didn’t really belong to her – like she could only feel what she logically knew. White lips fell open, as if she wanted to speak, but nothing came out. It was too much like a nightmare to be real, and in her mind, everything just began to blur. S t a y w i t h m e. But no matter her efforts, Amelia Shepherd was drifting away.
G A S P. It was getting harder and harder
to breathe, her body convulsing as it took

gaze b r i t t l e with conviction, she hissed:
“Amelia Shepherd, you stay awake! You hear
me? Stay a w a k e ! Don’t you dare close
your eyes on me now.”
