Scar Tissue || Arizona and Teddy

At the realization of who she was talking to this about, her eyes sent the woman an apology. Sometimes she didn’t take into consideration the feelings of others in these situations, she knew Teddy had went through something much worse so she knew how it felt. Her friend knew loss more than anyone, or the thought of losing them more than anyone, she knew the feeling of fear of being left with absolutely nothing.
In the moment of her life she spoke of, Arizona knew that she could not live without Callie, she could not be the happy person she was without her. She could not remember ever caring about someone as much as she did her. When she met Teddy’s eyes, she nodded her head, “I know, I just - I wish there were things I could forget. More than that I wish there were mistakes that could be erased so she wouldn’t be in pain.”
A soft tear dropped down because she remembered promising herself that she would do everything that she could to make Callie happy after that incident because she deserved nothing less, but all she had done lately was put her through pain. She was lucky that she was alive and that she came back to her, she felt lucky in that moment. “I know - I wanted to make her the happiest person everyday after that because I knew how lucky I was when she woke up. I need to do that again, because all I’ve done is break her.” She put her head on Teddy’s shoulder, “I used to be the reason she smiled everyday and now I’m the reason she cries.” Tears spilled from her eyes as she closed her eyes and bit back the cries that were threatening to come from her.

Because she’d known Arizona’s pain once upon a darker time, Teddy knew it was the scars on the inside that hurt the most. Those were the scars that didn’t make a big deal out of themselves in daylight; the ones that were only too easy to hide with a smile and a brave face. Those very same scars were the ones that would rip wide in the lonely hours of the night, haunting her like a familiar ghost she’d befriended over time. But there was some kind of comfort that came with the pain, if only to remind her that the people she’d once held dear were worth so much more than memories.

Holding her friend in a bid to hide her from a hurt she knew there was no escaping from, Teddy let Arizona cry herself out upon her shoulder. There was no running from a hurt like this — the cuts couldn’t be covered by a band-aid, nor could they be sutured shut. No, only time could heal the ragged scars that tore through her ravaged heart.

“Oh, Arizona,” she whispered sadly. And though her words were nothing more than empty, she promised: “It’ll all be okay. You and Callie will work things out — you love each other, and everyone makes mistakes. We’re only human, after all. You’ll make it through this, and you’ll only be stronger for it — god knows Henry and I were never perfect.”

Glass-green eyes drifting fathomlessly away, she continued: “You know we had a fight the day before he died? Well, I’m just glad I told him I loved him before he — he…” Swallowing, Teddy knew that Arizona would understand, even though she couldn’t bring herself to say it. That scar still lay anything but gentle on her mind, and barely enough time had passed for it to mend just yet.
