Do You Believe In Magic? || Amelia & Teddy

The surgery went smoothly. It usually did. And the only thing out of the ordinary this time was the patient – a colleague’s daughter. No pressure there or anything. But the procedure was routine; the kind she would normally give to Stephanie or any lesser-trained surgeon to practice were it not Delia on whom she was operating. It was for that same reason that the neurosurgeon was to oversee her complete recovery, and for that, she needed more information – particularly about the heart transplant she had noticed on the young girl’s chart. Never in her time knowing either had she heard a word about it, but she suspected since it took place over a decade before, it would be a strange topic to bring up without reason.

With a soft knock, Amelia entered the room of her young patient, pushing closed the door behind her. Delia was still knocked out from the surgery, but as she suspected, Teddy was faithfully by her side – as if she would be anywhere else. “Hey,” she whispered. “I’m sure Edwards told you already, but the surgery went great. She should be awake soon and I expect her to make a full recovery.”

Flipping open the chart, she quickly scribbled down a few of her vitals. “I have a couple questions about D.’s medical history for her treatment. Is now an okay time for you, or should I come back?”

Teddy had spent the better part of the past four hours physically sick with worry — if Delia hadn’t needed her mother to be strong for her, Teddy was quite sure that she’d have crumbled long ago. As it was, she’d still had to be physically led away from the OR floor more than once by well-meaning nurses.

If only she hadn’t had to go through this alone. Teddy knew she had no place fearing for herself when her daughter’s life was in danger — yet, she couldn’t help but miss the way Henry had always kept her sane. This was his daughter, too — and Teddy could always count on him to throw her a rubber ring when need be.

Amelia’s gentle knock interrupted her thoughts. Running her fingers through her hair, she tried hard to keep her exhaustion from showing — for while Amelia’s words offered her some comfort, Teddy knew she wouldn’t breathe easy until she saw her daughter’s eyes open at last.

It took some effort for her to speak, but Teddy managed a weak nod: “Y — Yeah, now’s fine. What do you need to know?”
