❝ –– perhaps it’s true that things can change in a day. and when they do, those few dozen hours, like the salvaged remains of a burned house—the charred clock, the singed photograph, the scorched furniture—must be resurrected from the ruins and examined. and suddenly, they become the bleached bones of a story.
Arizona stared at her bestfriend as she waited for the blonde to tell her. Why was it taking so long for her to tell her how Aaron was? It’s not like she asked about her whole entire squad or anything like that. It was just one guy.
She watched as Teddy said he was dead. Arizona opened her mouth and closed it, not knowing what to say. She cleared her throat lightly before shaking her head no, it wasn’t right. She looked up tearfully to Teddy. “What about the rest of my squad. are they…?”.
“They’re fine,” Teddy reassured, though
she
knew better than anyone that there was no
way to make up for the loss of someone she
looked upon as family. It didn’t matter how
many living souls stood for the one who had d i e d — the
grief would never fail to weigh
heavily upon their hearts.
“I don’t know
what I’d have done if I had lost
you,” Teddy whispered. Though she grieved
the loss of a brother in arms, a part of her counted herself l u c k y to still have the
friend she loved still safe beside her. She
hated herself for it, but those thoughts
were
only human — and no person could ever be
so truly selfless.
