The surgeon looked over at Teddy and noted the look on her face and her body language. Scarlett’s heart clenched tightly. She’d been there… Right where Teddy was sitting, in the same exact situation, so she understood her pain better than anyone else. She also understood how wrong things could go very quickly.
“No, I didn’t. That would’ve raised questions you really don’t need being asked right now. She’s asleep in the attending’s lounge… Teddy, you need to get help,” Scarlett said firmly.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Teddy spat, only the waver in her voice betraying her lie. The anger at being found out; the fear — it made her defensive; dangerous. “No — you don’t know what you’re talking about, so why don’t you leave me the hell alone? Just mind your own damn business, Scarlett!”
But behind vile words, she was drowning. Where tenacity was catching, she only sank deeper; the more she tried to hide it, the less she could breathe. And now, with her pride less bruised than her ribs from the night before, she could only hold her head high and hope that Scarlett couldn’t see through it.
