❝ –– perhaps it’s true that things can change in a day. and when they do, those few dozen hours, like the salvaged remains of a burned house—the charred clock, the singed photograph, the scorched furniture—must be resurrected from the ruins and examined. and suddenly, they become the bleached bones of a story.
Of course I do. I love you more than anyone else in the whole world. The words were right there on the tip of her tongue, but it was sadly where they would stay. Her gaze quickly dropped to the floor below as she instead replied, “I shouldn’t even be here right now. I really need to go before I end up getting you in even more trouble than I already have.”
“I missed you too,” Delia concurred, moving straight into Teddy’s embrace. God how she had missed that comfort and the reassurance that she would forever be s a f e and l o v e d.
“Tthis isn’t fair,” she commented, reluctantly pulling away from the hug after allowing it to linger for a couple minutes. Wet eyes began to survey the room as she made her way to the couch and took a seat. So much needed to be said, but Delia had absolutely no idea where to start. Small talk seemed to be just about all she could handle right then. “I like what you’ve done to the place, though. Like, it still feels homey, even though it obviously is not and never will be your trueh o m e.”
“My sweet girl,” Teddy breathed, lips pressed to Delia’s forehead. More so to reassure herself than anything, she said: “It’s all going
to be alright. We’re going to be okay , baby, I promise. We have to be.” If only there was a saving grace to make sure that her daughter was s a f e — but Teddy couldn’t trust in
anyone but herself to do that.
Forcing a smile in spite of everything, Teddy
sighed and took Delia’s hand, unable and
unwilling to let her go. Clinging desperately
to any reason for Delia to stay, she suggested:
“Want to see how I did up your room?” It was
a low blow, for Teddy knew better than anyone
that this was no place for her daughter to be.
But
if things didn’t go her way — well, she just
wanted to be ready.
