Needing Her Help || Derek and Teddy

Derek was slightly relieved when she noticed that he was telling her about getting a CT done. He looked at her as if to say thank you. When he heard her mention Amelia, he didn’t know what to think. He knew that he didn’t want her seeing him like this. But then he also knew if he knew one amazing neurosurgeon besides himself, it was his sister. He looked at Teddy and blinked once.

To Derek, Amelia was family — and family couldn’t be allowed in that OR. When you operated with your heart and not your head, the untold consequences were too great to tell. She hadn’t understood this before, but she did now; she knew that if she’d been in that OR when Henry died, she would never be able to forgive herself. And this policy was in place to protect people like her, like Amelia — protect them, so that they might be able to move on afterwards.

“What is it, Derek?” Teddy asked, snapping up the guardrails on the gurney. “We’re taking you up to CT, and we’ll have Shadow-Shepherd — sorry, Dr. Nelson — to scrub in once we figure out what’s going on. I’ll be handling the trauma to your chest and lungs. Is that okay?”
