The heat of the moment had Arizona already
regretting her thoughtless actions. Once she
saw the look of shock and fear in her friend’s
eyes, she realized that she had finally let her
emotions get the better of her. She had never
been physically violent with anyone because
of her emotions.

It terrified her how she was losing herself.

An apology began to slip from her lips before
she heard her friend’s voice interrupt her from
even the opportunity to refute her actions. She
listened, Arizona knew that there was truth to
Teddy’s words, but that didn’t make it hurt any
less that her best friend wasn’t there when she
really needed her.

That’s what friends were supposed to be for.
                                 Or so she thought.

Taking in the blonde’s words, she could only
shake her head as anger raged through her
once again. She kept her arms crossed over
her chest so she wouldn’t let herself lose the
little bit of control that she still had. The small
blonde had not wanted to physically harm her
friend no matter how angry she was. Arizona’s
mind was not thinking rationally when she let
her mind control her actions. When she heard
her friend’s excuse, she shook her head, there
was still a look of hurt in her eyes, “You did not
have to leave the state because you were fired
- you could have went to another hospital.”

You could have stayed for me.

“I thought that you may have valued our friendship
more than that. You could have called.” There were
tears in her eyes by this point, and she let them fall
down her cheeks, she was hurt. “I needed you, more
than Callie. I couldn’t talk to her the way I do to you.”
All she could do is shake her head as she started to
remember how alone she felt without her best friend.

She was alone, and she hated it.

Teddy couldn’t count the number of times the
darkness had kept her from the phone; fears
of judgement and fears of the places that had
forsaken her only held her back. She never
wished to return to a place where her sadness
had replaced the love, for that wasn’t how she
wanted to remember her home. Chasing her
away were the ghosts she’d been trying so
hard to leave behind — and, to some extent,
she’d managed it. In a place where no one
knew her and friends were a thing of the past,
she’d forged a new life for herself out of the
dust.

But if you ever fall down
                                          straight to the bottom…

There was a part of her that knew Arizona
was right, that there was truth in the way her
actions spoke of cowardice. Before then,
Teddy had never known herself to run away
— and she was becoming increasingly certain
that it was because she’d never known real
pain. Now that she did, she could surely vouch
for the fact that nothing hurt more than a heart
which had loved and lost.

                       …and you can’t get back
                                               to where you started —

“I did have to leave,” Teddy said coldly. “You
of all people should know that. How could I stay
here when every rainy day, every hall and every
room in this goddamn place reminds me of him?
Don’t you ever judge me for leaving — I would
have ended it long before now if I’d stayed.”

                       — any place and any time,

As Arizona started crying, something inside
of her broke. The glass in her eyes thawed out,
and her arms reached for the friend that she’d
missed nearly as much as her husband. Voice
as soft as it had been before the pain and the
grief had taken its toll, Teddy whispered: “Oh,
Arizona. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me —
I can’t lose you, too.”

                                    you’ve got to know:
                                                        for you, I’ll fight.
