The brunette looked up at the blonde doctor, slightly
confused. She didn’t want this life, but it was easier
than her other options. Options where she felt the
pressure to be the good daughter, become a doctor,
and live out a miserable life where all she did was eat,
and perform back to back surgeries. “If saying yes means
that you’ll leave me alone and I can get the hell out of this
joint then yes, this is the life I want for myself.” Carter
rolled her eyes and scoffed, “Jesus, Teddy. Don’t go getting
all sentimental on me now, it doesn’t look good on you.”

“It’s one thing to say it, and another to mean it,” Teddy said
seriously. “Not once have you looked me in the eyes, and I
need you to — because I won’t give up on you until you do.
Trust me, Carter, you’ll  need  someone  to stand by you if
you’re ever going to make it. I can be that someone, if you
so  choose  —  but  if  you  make the wrong decision here,
there’s no taking that back.”  She’d  played her ace  — an
ultimatum, final and resolute. It was cruel, but history had
taught her that it had to be so;  in  the  game of fighting fire
with fire, Teddy couldn’t afford to lose.
