“It’s one thing to say it, and another to mean it,” Teddy said seriously. “Not once have you looked me in the eyes, and I need you to — because I won’t give up on you until you do. Trust me, Carter, you’ll need someone to stand by you if you’re ever going to make it. I can be that someone, if you so choose — but if you make the wrong decision here, there’s no taking that back.” She’d played her ace — an ultimatum, final and resolute. It was cruel, but history had taught her that it had to be so; in the game of fighting fire with fire, Teddy couldn’t afford to lose.
