  • Teddy: Guys, I need your help.
  • Teddy: I’m seeing signs of PTSD in Peyton and I hate to see her go through what I did. I dealt with it so badly that I’m not sure what to even say to her without being a hypocrite.
  • Teddy: What the hell do I do?

drowenalexandercodyhunt:

The work is just never done…

I feel you. But an idle mind is a dangerous thing, and I’d rather have my hands full. Wouldn’t you?

Owen sighed heavily. “Well I hope it was easier for you because it sure wasn’t for us.” He scratched his head, unsure if he wanted to continue this particular subject right in the cereal isle. Owen had a lot of pent up anger for some of his so called friends and he knew how inappropriate it would be to let it out now. He took a breath. “Whatever. I guess it doesn’t matter anymore.” Owen turned away from her and started pushing his cart up the isle. It was surreal seeing Teddy again. He’d missed her terribly and wished that she’d kept contact with him. Owen had wanted to call her and tell her what was going on in his life and while he’d tried, the number hadn’t worked. He supposed that was what helped his old friendship with Arizona. She had been there through some of the crap. Now he just felt alone.

“Owen-”

The emotion that rose like a tide in Teddy’s chest as she watched Owen walk away was too much to bear. How had her closest friend turned on her, and how could she have turned on him? Standing alone in the aisle, all she could think of was what she could’ve said but didn’t.

So many regrets.

Owen nodded at her answer. He understood the relationship she had with her family and frowned, knowing that even after all these years, it still wasn’t repaired. “I see. So…” And Owen wasn’t entirely sure he should start in on this but it might be the only time he’d see her. “Why didn’t you call..or email or something? I mean..I know we fought but that was years and years ago.”

Had it really been years since the day she departed from Seattle Grace (the first place she had found sanctuary in for so long)? That didn’t make Teddy feel old or anything.

“I needed a clean break. I thought it’d be easier, you know, if I didn’t miss you. And everyone else.” She tried to keep the accusation out of her voice and failed abysmally. Teddy had long since forgiven Owen and came to terms with the fact that what he did was justified, but that didn’t make the hurt go away.

Owen laughed. “I know. Trust me. I know. It was a shock to the both of us.  And yes, the very same Cristina you taught. She’s still feisty as shit but she’s also a wonderful Mum. It’s a little hard to believe but she did it. And she did it because she wanted to, not because I pushed her. Right now though, she’s in LA at a Cardio conference.” He grabbed a couple boxes of cereal and threw them into his cart. There was a lot he wanted to tell her. At one point in their lives, they had been best friends and told each other everything. Now, however, Owen wasn’t entirely sure he even knew her anymore. “So…you’re back in Seattle…Why..would you come back here of all places?”

The truth? Teddy had nowhere else to go. Of course, she couldn’t say that. Lie after lie auditioned in her mind, but she settled on a slight falsehood.

“I guess… the people here are the only people I can count on. You do know that my folks aren’t the supportive type, right?”

It was true; if Teddy were to return home after twenty years of quickly dropped calls and ripped-up cards, she’d be kicked to the curb within moments of touching the tarnished doorbell.

Owen kind of laughed. She genuinely had no idea what had gone on in his life since she’d gone and it was a weird feeling. “Well…” He ran another hand through his short hair and tried to start to the beginning. “Cristina and I had kids. Well 4 of them actually, which by the way, was entirely a surprise. There’s Gabriel, who’s the oldest. He’s 5. Lily Bean…Lily. She’s 3. We had surprise twins, Noah and Thomas. I mean I guess I should have suspected we could have twins considering Julie and I but 4? How we even managed to do that is crazy. It’s a busy life but we love it regardless…” While Owen considered telling her the bad bits of his life, he decided against it for the time being. He didn’t know how long she would be here or what their relationship might be like later. Owen had decided be as reserved as he could. “Oh and I opened up a trauma center.”

“I heard.” Teddy could feel herself settling into the rhythm of a banter that she and Owen once found so familiar. “Four kids?” She didn’t mask the incredulity in her voice. “Wow, are we talking about the same Cristina here?” The Cristina Teddy taught was the girl with limitless ambition and skilled hands, the girl that Teddy would trust with any heart – even her husband’s. So many people she no longer knew…

Owen put some sort of a smile on his face when he realized it was, in fact, her. It was surreal seeing her again after so long. She looked virtually the same as she did those years ago. He ran a hand through his red hair, trying to figure out what to say. At least he had managed to say her name. That was a good start. “Uhh..so you’re here!” Owen finally said.

“Yeah, I am.” Teddy gave Owen a once-over, taking in the new lines and the wan skin.  Despite that, he looked really happy and content. She wished she was where he was, wished that she had stayed on at SGMW so that he could be part of her life. Teddy had missed more than one chapter of many people’s lives and she’d alienated them like nothing else. “What have you been up to?”

A couple weeks ago she had called in a panic after losing her job and confiding in Owen that Henry was in a coma. Sure he had tried to help but ultimately, that was the end of it. She hadn’t called since and Owen often wondered what it was about and what she had ended up doing. He hadn’t seen her in a number of years and so many things had happened. His life being the way it was, Owen actually forgot about the phone call. He forgot about it up until he was in the grocery store without the kids. Owen had gotten the babysitter to watch the kids while he went out and ran errands. He was standing in the cereal isle, staring at the boxes wondering which ones the kids might want and how much sugar was in each. Owen glanced down the isle to look at some oatmeal when he caught sight of her. He was slightly hesitant to approach her but did it anyway. “Teddy?” Owen asked, furrowing his eyebrows.

Hearing her name, Teddy did a double take and dropped what she was holding back on the shelf. She turned and let her hair fall into her face before acknowledging Owen’s presence – “Oh, Owen. Hi.”

She was aware that she was in a better place than she was before, but it didn’t stop her from feeling violated because this man had seen her at her weakest. It was in an effort to forget that Teddy managed a feeble smile.
